In England, struggling to read is more closely linked to the risk of being unemployed than in any other developed country. Nearly one in three children growing up in poverty in England leaves primary school unable to read well. This can have a massive impact on their future chances in life.

As publishers, we know we can make the biggest impact by making reading fun and accessible through the power of our books, authors, characters and brands.

Creating hubs of imagination in UK primary schools with Puffin World of Stories

Puffin World of Stories aims to address some of the key challenges facing reading for pleasure in schools where budget constraints often mean investing in school libraries and librarians and buying new books is not an option.

Research shows that reading for pleasure improves children’s ability to read, write and progress at school, as well as having a positive impact on their mental wellbeing.

We piloted the programme with 58 primary schools, supporting them to transform their libraries and reading spaces into hubs of creativity and imagination. We expanded Puffin World of Stories to 80 more schools in September 2019.

Supporting reading groups in prison

Prison Reading Groups is a charity which sets up and facilitates monthly reading groups in 35 prisons across the UK. For prisoners, the reading groups can be an important route to rehabilitation. They encourage empathy with the lives of others through reading: promote critical self-reflection and mutual respect; and help connect prisoners with life outside prison walls.

Each month we support 10 reading groups who choose any book published by Penguin Random House, and we donate a free copy to each member.
